Art has the power to redefine how we experience the world, to capture the spirit of an era in a single line, a colour, a form. For more than 120 years, Montblanc has stood at the forefront of culture, championing creativity in all its forms and translating it into objects of enduring meaning. With the Montblanc Masters of Art collection, the Maison continues this dialogue between artistic vision and elevated craftsmanship, reinterpreting the legacy of great artists through writing instruments designed for today’s collectors.

With its latest collection, Montblanc turns its focus to Henri Matisse (1869–1954), a revolutionary force in modern art whose bold handling of colour, bold shapes and radical simplification redefined the visual language of the 20th century. His diverse body of work spanning painting, sculpture, and paper cutouts, reflects his commitment to pushing the boundaries of artistic expression, and often exudes a sense of joy and playfulness. From the vibrant canvases of Fauvism to the groundbreaking “gouaches découpées” of his later years, M atisse continually distilled form to its purest expression.

Developed in partnership with Maison Matisse, the Montblanc Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse collection explores a different chapter of the French artist’s creative legacy in each edition, translating distinct masterpieces into design details directly inspired by his works. The overall shape of the collection’s writing instruments is inspired by Matisse’s sculptures often characterised by fluid, organic shapes and simplified forms, while the clip references Matisse’s “cut -outs” and his artwork The Sheaf (1953) in particular. As a signature of Montblanc’s Masters of Art line, the proportions of each edition approximate the golden ratio, a timeless aesthetic principle that connects many of the world’s most admired artworks .
Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 4810

Inspired by Blue Nude III (1952), one of the most iconic works from Matisse’s celebrated cut -out series, the Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 4810 translates the artist’s bold blue-and-white composition into a striking writing instrument. What appears at first glance to be an abstract interplay of colour gradually reveals the seated female figure when the barrel is rotated. This echoes Matisse’s own process of “drawing with scissors” , taking paper painted with gouache, and cutting out organic and abstract shapes and arranging them into lively compositions. The blue and white lacquer of the edition is complemented by platinum-coated fittings, while the cap top features the Montblanc emblem in white precious resin set in blue precious resin.
The organically shaped clip, coated in white lacquer, is inspired by the rhythmic botanical forms of The Sheaf (1953), while the handcrafted, rhodium-coated solid Au 750 gold nib bears delicate decoration referencing Matisse’s lithographic work, alongside the interwoven initials “H” and “M.” The decorative pattern on the platinum-coated cone borrows a botanical motif: the elliptical shapes resemble flower petals whose variety of colour and form were a never-ending source of ideas for the artist. Limited to 4,810 fountain pens and 4,810 rollerballs as a tribute to the height of Mont Blanc in metres, this edition embodies the vitality, clarity and radical simplicity that define Matisse’s artistic legacy.
Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 888

Dedicated to The Romanian Blouse (1940), the Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 888 celebrates Matisse’s fascination with textile s, costumes, ornament and colour as expressive structure. The barrel and cap reinterpret the vivid red and blue palette of the painting, their textured lacquer recalling the surface of a canvas. Embroidered motifs from the blouse are translated into intricate decorative elements: black and red lacquer details on the barrel and refined engravings on the solid Au 750 gold cone.
The Montblanc emblem in mother-of-pearl is set within black onyx and framed by a solid Au 750 gold ring, while the cone is also crowned with black onyx, reinforcing the interplay between material richness and artistic reference. The solid Au 750 gold nib is embossed with Matisse’s drawing Large Face (Mask) (1952), honouring the purity of his line. Limited to 888 fountain pens, a number associated with prosperity and harmony, this edition pays homage to Matisse’s decorative cosmos and his masterful balance of colour and form.
Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 161

The Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 161 commemorates Matisse’s transformative journey to Tahiti in 1930, a voyage that sparked renewed artistic freedom and inspired works such as Window in Tahiti. Crafted from partly blackened Ag 925 sterling silver to enhance depth, the cap features a skilful 3D recreation of hand-engraved details from the painting, capturing the trees and boat as observed from the artist’s hotel window in Papeete. The barrel, fashioned from cocobolo wood, features a geometric pattern based on the traditional tapa cloth brought back by Matisse from the South Seas.
The solid Au 750 rose gold cap top is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in iridescent paua shell, reminiscent of the ocean’s shifting light. The handcrafted nib, also in solid Au 750 rose gold and partly rhodium-coated, bears the Greek letter Phi (Φ), symbolizing the golden ratio (1.618…), alongside details inspired by Matisse’s work Polynesia, The Sky. Limited to 161 pieces in reference to this divine proportion, the edition embodies harmony, craftsmanship and the influence of distant lands and luminous colour on Matisse’s work.
Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 96

Honouring Matisse’s monumental masterpiece The Dance II, the Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 96 captures the rhythm, movement and elemental energy of the iconic composition. Artfully hand-applied vivid blue and turquoise lacquer is contrasted with dancers made from bronze, who appear to encircle the cap and barrel in a timeless choreography. Delicate engravings accentuate the contours of the dancers’ bodies, making them appear more delineated and vibrant. The solid Au 750 rose gold fittings and rings – some featuring special engravings to create a sparkling effect – complete the design with an eye-catching finish.
The cap top features the Montblanc emblem in turquoise stone, framed by solid Au 750 gold and contrasted with red jasper, a stone that also appears at the base of the cone. The solid Au 750 gold nib is embossed with a decoration referencing Matisse’s lithographic work, alongside the interwoven initials “H” and “M” . Strictly limited to 96 pieces referencing the pivotal year 1896 when Matisse first exhibited at the Salon des Beaux-Arts, this edition captures the joyous audacity that propelled him onto the international stage.
Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 8

The pinnacle of the collection, the Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse Limited Edition 8 is inspired by Purple Robe and Anemones (1937), a work that exemplifies Matisse’s devotion to decorative composition, vibrant colour and stylised form. Crafted from solid Au 750 white gold, the cap and barrel are adorned with meticulously handcrafted enamel that reinterprets key elements of the painting, from the flowing striped robe to the lush bouquet of anemones. Intricate hand-finished 3D engravings on the lower barrel and cone echo the arabesque ornamentation of the flower table depicted in the artwork.
A bouquet’s green leaves and red blossoms are echoed in the design: a green jade stone graces the base of the cone, while a red carnelian adorns the cap, crowned with the Montblanc emblem rendered in pavé-set diamonds on solid Au 750 gold. Warm cognac-coloured diamonds gracefully encircle both the cap and the barrel, adding a final touch of sophistication. The handcrafted solid Au 750 gold nib, set with a brilliant-cut diamond, features an embossing inspired by Matisse’s Large Face (Mask). Limited to only eight pieces worldwide, this extraordinary writing instrument stands as a collector’s tribute to Matisse’s poetic vision and Montblanc’s highest expression of artisanal excellence.
From bold lacquer and precious metals to engraved silver, rare woods and gemstones, the Montblanc Masters of Art Homage to Henri Matisse collection celebrates the enduring dialogue between artistic genius and master craftsmanship.
